Rule Changes

Unfortunately due to inclement weather the AGM was not a quorum. As we had some important business to tidy up it was decided at the meeting to ballot our members regarding the amendments to the Club Rules (click this link to see the details). So members should receive letters through the post early next week (13th April 2008) asking you to vote to accept or reject the proposed changes which have been agreed by your Committee. Only those eligible to vote will receive letters with Joint Members receiving  two. Please respond as soon as is possible.

Breeder Links Are Going

The Breeder Links are being replaced with a Breeders Directory - some areas have been completed already (International, Western & Eastern) others will be completed during the next 7 days! We are using the information supplied to us by members on the Membership Update Form - if you are not listed then we probably haven't had a completed form back from you - so please do fill one out now. Please note that we are only linking to Breeders Website's who have placed a link back to us on their website.

We hope you all enjoyed the Show at its new venue. General feedback on the day was extremely positive. There are many people who should be thanked for their sterling efforts, in particular and in sequence of events:

Dee Marsland-Round - without Dee we wouldn't have found the fantastic venue or rosettes!
Brenda Hollandt - who found us Jackie Pell our Show Manager
Jackie Pell - who ran the Show with supreme efficiency ably assisted by Sue Featherstone
Viv Clerkin / Mr & Mrs Farmer/ Sharon Keegan / Joy Pearce - for their efforts on the table
Brenda Hollandt / Jan Allison - for their efforts with the trophies and their membership recruitment drive!
Pam Potter / Pam's Team & Heather Rowe - for the fantastic catering
Heather Rowe - for her efforts in increasing revenue at the gate!
Ellie Round & Liam Frances for running the raffle

Supreme Cat Show - 17th November 2007

We hope all our members had a successful day. Team SBSHCC at the Club Stand in Club Row had a very busy day generating lots of interest in the breeds we cover, interest in the Kitten List as well as a few potential new members. Many thanks go to the hard work put in by Heather Rowe, Viv Clerkin, and Maggie Whiteley who made it all happen. Thanks also to the many members who came along to the stand - its great to see some friendly faces as well as to put some faces to names!

Membership Update

As most of you should be aware we have been updating the information that the Club holds on all our Members. If you want to use the Kitten List or want to be included in the new Breeders Directory we need the "Membership Update Form" back now. You should have received a copy of the form with your AGM Paperwork and also with your Membership Card. If you don't have a copy of it then please click on the "Change Details" button on the Web Site under the Member Services Section.

Results of the SBSHCC Ballot

Thank you to all the members who voted in our recent ballot (over 20% of you did - a credible response by anyone's standards). The results were as follows:

Resolution For Against
A 83 Votes (98.8%) 1 Vote (1.19%)
B 82 Votes (97.6%) 2 Votes (2.38%)

There were a total of 86 forms submitted - unfortunately two of which could not be counted (although they were both in favour of the resolutions) The ballott forms will be kept and if any one would like to view the forms they will be available at the Club's next AGM in 2008. The Committee will now decide the best way to approach GCCF Council with the proposed resolutions.

New Registration Policy for British Shorthair Cats

The long talked about amendments to the Registration Policy for British Shorthairs has finally been approved by GCCF Council at the June 2006 meeting. The new policy which comes into effect for all kittens registered from 1st October 2006. If you have any queries in the meantime please contact our Club Secretary, Maggie Whiteley who will try to help or direct you to someone who can.

More On PKD

The GCCF British Shorthair Group BAC urges that all British Shorthair Breeders should have their breeding cats tested for the presence of PKD or the PKD Gene using the FAB approved Scheme.

PKD Gene Test

PKD is an inherited kidney disease which has become very common in Persian cats and Exotic Shorthairs. Many cat breeders are aware of the problem and have been taking steps to eradicate the gene defect from their breeding lines.

Up until recently the only way of determining if a cat had PKD was with an ultrasound scan of the kidneys. The problem with this method is that cats had to be 10 months or older and the test needs to be performed by a Sonographer who is fully trained in analyzing the results. This in effect means using one of approximately 9 Veterinary Practices who are authorised by the FAB to conduct this screening.

An alternative - The Gene Test

The tests can be run on a blood sample, or on a sample of cheek cells (known as a buccal swab) collected by swabbing the cat's mouth.

Cats can be tested at any age, but if pre-weaning kittens are being tested it must be done using a blood sample rather than a cheek swab. This is because nursing kittens will have traces of the queen's DNA in their mouth, and this could cause a false test result. However collection of cheek swabs is significantly less stressful for the cat, or kitten, than collection of a blood sample, so it may be preferable to wait until the kitten is weaned, so that testing can be done using a cheek swab.

General Information

We request that all our members keep us up to date with the availability of kittens. Please let either Maggie Whiteley (Tel: 020 7249 5342) or Adrian Miller (Email: adrian@teknocat.co.uk) as soon as any kittens you have advertised are booked. By doing this you help keep the list current and reduce the number of complaints that the club receives.
